The Santa Monica Bay Woman’s Club debuts its spoken word series with A Womanʼs Voice. This, the first reading in Gangs of the Kosmos, features four original writers who present new works in poetry, prose and theater. Elyse Ashton embodies Anais Nin, as she reads excepts from the upcoming play Anais Nin: Woman of the Dream, written by Doraine Poretz, using Ninʼs own words to illuminate the womanʼs life. Lisa La Rose is a poet and social worker. She has written since she first could put pen to paper. Professional writer, and working actress, Laurie OʼBrien is the author of the play Inside Out. She frequently writes for National Geographicʼs Geo Kids and appears at the Odyssey Theater, LA. Long-time Santa Monica resident Shirley Windward, is a poet who is also well known as the founder of the Windward School in Los Angeles. The Series takes its name from Walt Whitmanʼs preface to Leaves of Grass. It is inspired by the spirit of humanity, freedom of expression, lack of social prejudice and absence of dogma. The series is free and open to all.
